The camp has 5 tents and 2 lodges immersed in the savannah. Each tent and lodge is furnished in a very simple and informal manner. It provides a good quality standard level with private bathrooms, also embedded within the rocks, equipped with a shower and hot and cold water.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared in the kitchen next to bar /restuarant area, offering International cuisine with a hint of swahili flare. The owners will always be available and at the client’s complete disposal.

After breakfast, start the safari in the Tsavo East National Park with lunch at the lodge during the journey. In the afternoon to Malindi, a street full of scenic villages. Arrival at the selected hotel and dinner.

Tsavo National Park is divided between Tsavo East and Tsavo West, and is the 'great national park in Kenya and one of the' big in the world. The west of Tsavo has a volcanic landscape and is the home of the "Big Five" animals. It also offers a temporary home to a huge number of migratory birds between October and January. Tsavo East, across the main road has many hills and is familiar to large herds of elephants and buffalo.

Other places of interest in the area are: The small village of Makindu with the Sikh temple, and its cooperative of artisans. The languages of solidified lava Shetani and Chaimu that offer fun excursions cave. World’s Oldest Desert: Reported to be the oldest desert on earth, the Namib is approximately 80 million years old. Completely devoid of surface water, it is bisected by several dry riverbeds and is characterised by extensive, undulating dunes. The Sahara may be larger and Gobi more isolated, but the Namib is the very oldest, so on this trip, prepare for the best desert experience possible!

The Living Desert: At first glance, the Namib’s interior appears totally devoid of fauna & flora but look closely and you’ll find that apart from the diamonds and uranium that have been mined here, the desert’s unique plant and animal life is definitely another of its infinite treasures. One outstanding living wonder is the famous Welwitschia mirabilis, a plant that can live for up to five hundred years. Although its tenacity and longevity are remarkable, the fact that it has the appearance of a heap of garden refuse means that instead of an earthshattering visual experience you may want to concentrate on its remarkable

age when taking pictures!

The “Sheltering” Desert: At the start of the Second World War, German Henno Martin and his colleague and friend Hermann Korn, feared internment in a camp for Nazi’s. Consequently, they escaped into the Namib Desert. For two and a half years they eked out a living in this harsh environment. In later years, Martin published his account of this experience, titling his book, The Sheltering Desert and later their story was also made into a film. As you drive along, or when setting up camp, imagine trying to survive here without the luxuries offered to you on this trip. You may see the Namib in a different light!

* The Diamond Desert: The discovery of diamonds in 1908 around Kolmanskuppe initiated an uncontrolled rush of prospectors into the region. The German Government was forced to establish the so-called “Sperrgebiet” between 26-degree line of latitude and Namibia’s southern border, stretching 100-kilometres inland. As a result, independent prospectors were forced to turn northwards beyond this area. This resulted in the discovery of diamonds at Spencer Bay and between Meob and the Conception Bay area (Diamond Area no. 2) during December 1908. A total of 5000 diamond claims were registered in 1909 and hopeful fortune hunters tried their luck at Saddle Hill and Spencer Bay, also traveling via Swakopmund and Sandwich Harbour southwards towards Meob Bay. However, the small yields of diamonds from these claims meant few were successful in their pursuit of riches.

* Custodians of the Desert: the Topnaar community: The !Nara fruit, a wild melon that grows in the Kuiseb River bed, is unique to the Namib Desert. For more than a thousand years it has been the traditional staple food of the Topnaar or ≠Aonin-people, one of the oldest communities of Nambia. The Topnaars belong to the Nama tribe, a Khoi group. Traditionally, the Topnaars acquired a lot of their food from the sea, spearing fish in the shallow water and hunting seals, birds and turtles. For this reason, they were also called Beachcombers by European settlers. Eventually, members of the tribe settled around the Kuiseb River, harvesting the !Nara and keeping livestock. Prepare to learn more about these fascinating people and their way of life as we journey.

The emphasis of the tour is not only on the adrenaline thrill of dune driving, but a huge part of its focus is studying the plants, small creatures and wildlife all of which make this desert their home. traveller you will find our Faces-tour to be both an unparalleled adrenaline rush and a journey of discovery. The dunes along this stretch of the Namib are higher and more challenging than elsewhere. Driving here requires good technique and discipline to manoeuvre from one dune strait to the next. The magnitude of what awaits you is difficult to express in words. Although the tour’s emphasis is not solely on 4x4 and off-road driving, driving on and over the world's highest sand dunes means previous experience and a proficiency in off-road driving are recommended. Beginners will be talked through each

phase of the journey.

Faces of the Namib Itinerary

DAY 1: Overnight Solitaire

We assemble at Solitaire, preferable by nightfall. This is the time to get last minute supplies and fill fuel tanks to the brim. Remember-you need fuel for six days. Since many group members may have been to Sossusvlei (one of the highlights of Namibia), a visit her is not included in our current itinerary. Tonight you will have the opportunity to meet guides and fellow travellers. After a detailed briefing of what to expect the next couple of days, you will be treated to a lovely meal around the campfire.

DAY 2: Solitaire to Kuiseb River Canyon

We depart from Solitaire and enter the Namib Nauklüft Park, 35kms north of town - restricted Namib area. This is the start of a unique adventure offering you aspects of the Namib seldom experienced by the “normal” tourist. We cross the Namib plains more or less on the same ox-wagon route followed by early settlers, German Schutztruppe (on horseback & camels) and ‘transport ryers’ in the late 1800s.

The route leads to the Kuiseb River. The landscape gradually changes from the typical Namib Plains into a colourful landscape of red sand dunes separated by grassy plains. The Kuiseb Canyon offers unique scenery. Its southern bank is formed by massive red sand dunes and northern bank by pitch black rock formations, while the riverbed itself is overgrown by massive endemic trees. The dry sand bed creates a kaleidoscope of green and white tones. We now proceed westwards along the edge of the canyon until we reach a spot were the dunes fall right into the river, near Homeb.

Depending on the status of the river (which may be in flood) we will ‘slip’ into the river enjoying its unique eco- system. This includes a variety of trees and an abundance of birds. We will cross over onto the northern bank of the Kuiseb Canyon, enjoying breathtaking views. On the northern side of the Kuiseb we will come across the southernmost examples of the Welwitschia mirabilis plant, endemic to the Namib Desert. Although the plant looks as if it has many leaves, it has only two, shredded by the wind over the course of centuries. The plant’s scientific names are a combination of the first European to describe it, a Slovenian botanist named Friedrich Welwitsch, and “Mirabilis” which comes from Latin and refers to its marvellous ability to survive in harsh, apparently waterless conditions. The night is spent under the desert sky!

Day 3: Desert Crossing!

The Namib Desert follows the coast of Namibia for approximately 2000 kilometres. It varies in width from 80 to 200 kilometres where it meets the Namib Escarpment. The most important climatic feature of the Namib Desert is its sparse and highly unpredictable annual rainfall which ranges from 5 mm in the west to about 85 mm along its eastern limits. Our aim with this trip is drive across the desert from east to west experiencing the dramatic change in the environment. From Homeb, we head southwest into the “sand sea”. On the way to Conception Bay massive dunes are negotiated. Once again ever-changing scenery and beautiful landscapes are enjoyed. Drivers’ skills are bound to be improving as the dunes offer greater and greater challenges. The dune straits are massive, and the dunes themselves even more impressive. Most are in

excess of 150m high. We once again make camp amongst them, enjoying the unique thrill of desert camping.

Days 4 & 5: Conception Bay and Ghost Towns

In the area between Conception Bay and Meob Bay the mining settlements of Holsatia, Charlottenfelder and Grillenberger were established during the heyday of diamond mining. No form of engine-driven transport was available during the first 15 years of exploration. Transporting supplies and mining equipment happened mainly by ship from Swakopmund or using the cutter, Viking, traveling via Sandwich Harbour, Conception and Meob Bays. Various shipping casualties occurred, such as when the Eduard Bohlen was stranded near Conception Bay in 1909. This rusty wraith is something exceptional to behold! During 1912/1913 a light railway from Conception Bay to Conception Water, and an 80-kilometer pipeline linking the settlements, were constructed. It is not clear how many pre-fabricated buildings were erected at the various settlements, as only the foundations of some of these are still visible today.

The exploration of Namibia by Europeans commenced from this coastline as early as 1485, although the inhospitable Namib Desert barred access to the interior. Probably the first European to set foot on Namibian soil was the Portuguese explorer, Diogo Cao or Diogo Cam, followed by Bartholomew Diaz two years later, on 8 December 1487. This date represented the holiday of "Maria's Conception". Therefore the bay received the name" Santa Maria da Conceicao" (Conception Bay). Today you will most likely see vast flocks of birds, drive past Cape Fur seal colonies, visit the wreck of the Eduard Bohlen near Conception Bay and see various relics dating back to the diamond mining era. In November 1914 all the people in this area were requested to stop operations and to proceed to Swakopmund. This order came as a result of an expected invasion of allied troops. This part of the journey is something history buffs will particularly enjoy…Keep a look out for wandering ghosts! Tonight you will be camping in the Conception Bay area, either at “Leeukoppie” (Lion’s Head) or at “Conception Water” – depending on progress and/or weather).

Day 6: “Langewand” to Walvis Bay

The dune belt opens up between Meob Bay and Conception Bay, but immediately after Conception it stretches right onto the beach. From Conception Bay you will be driving on the beach. Scenery is truly magnificent. You will also experience driving freedom – BIG TIME!! We are heading northwards towards Sandwich Bay passing the wreck of the Shawnee and negotiating the famed Langewand where massive dunes come straight down into sea. There are only two or three places in the world to see this natural phenomenon. Due to the tides, there is only a very limited time span to negotiate this stretch of beach. After Langewand the trail once again leads into the dunes, circumnavigating the salt pan ‘extensions’ of Sandwich Harbour. The dunes are still getting progressively larger, offering drivers an ever-changing dune driving experience.

From Sandwich Harbour the trail enters the roller coaster, a series of massive ‘roaring’ slip faces, not only giving you a thrilling experience but also offering breathtaking views of the harbour and a panorama of sandscapes on the way to Walvis. The trip concludes over dinner at the Yacht Club. Accommodation in Walvis Bay (or close it, at Lauberville)) is included in the package. The time has sadly come to say your good-byes to new friends made during this adventure of a lifetime.

OPTIONAL: Before returning home, make use of a unique opportunity to view the Namib from the air. A scenic flight over the Desert is a great way to experience the desert you have just negotiated from another angle- well worth the expense!

**Please note: Although some experience of dune driving and previous ‘wild camping’ (no formal facilities at camp) are recommended this does not mean that this will be a “Dakar Rally”. The emphasis is definitely on what the Namib has to offer but crossing massive dunes and doing a lot of off-road driving forms a large part of this experience. Participants must definitely have off-road endurance and a taste of adventure.

With arrival in Port Elizabeth you will make your way to the reserve where you will experience some of the best game viewing the Eastern Cape can offer. Schotia Safaris is the oldest game viewing reserve in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The reserve borders eastern side of the Addo National Park.

As one walks in through the gates of the reserve one can surely see the African theme carried through out the reserve. The accommodation at the reserve comes in the form of the tree themed bush lodges. All the lodges pride themselves with providing their guests with the truly authentic African experience. The one lodge caters for the more family styled bush experience while the other two lodges are more geared for the honeymoon type of outing. The lodges are set within the most lush and subtropical greenery. The thatched roof lodges are rustic ad simplistic. Their interiors are sparsely decorated whilst still maintaining its world class standards of excellence. The rooms have all been furnished with an en-suite bathroom and or bathroom. Day 3: Eastern Cape / Addo Elephant Back Safari

On day three before making your way home you will drive deep into the Zeeberg Mountains to Addo Elephant Back Safaris where you will experience an Elephant Back Safari. On the safari you will get the chance to walk with these animals at their own pace whilst learning more about these sometimes aloof creatures. The walk allows you to interact with, feed and observe the elephants in their natural habitat while our trained and qualified handlers share their specialized knowledge and insight into both the elephants and th is unique eco-system. The walk is in no way strenuous. After the walk you will also get the chance to ride these animals. The great heights of the Elephant backs will allow you to be able to inspect the beautiful landscape surrounding you. General Information on the region:

The Chobe National Park

                 Whether arriving by air or road, the first glimpse of the river – deep and dazzling in the sandy terrain – is always breathtaking. It appears as a swathe of brilliant, peacock blue ribbon, winding its              way through the tiny town of Kasane, and ensuing wilderness – the Chobe National Park.

                Undoubtedly one of Africa’s most beautiful rivers, the Chobe supports a diversity and concentration of wildlife unparalled anywhere else in the country.

                Established in 1968, the park covers approximately 11 7 00 sq kms, encompassing floodplains, swamps and woodland. The Chobe River forms its northern boundary. There are four distinct geographical areas in the park: the Chobe Riverfront, the Ngwezumba pans, Savuté and Linyanti.

                The most accessible and frequently visited of Botswana’s big game country, the Chobe Riverfront is most famous for its large herds of elephants and cape Buffalo, which during the dry winter months converge upon the river to drink.

                During this season, on an afternoon game drive, you may see hundreds of elephants at one time. You may be surrounded by elephants, as the main Serondella road becomes impassable and scores of family herds cross the main road to make their way to the river to drink, bathe and play.
                Driving the loops that hug the river’s edge, you may see up to 15 different species of animals on any one game drive, including waterbuck, lechwe, puku (this is the only part of Botswana where they can be seen), giraffe, kudu, roan and sable, impala, warthog, bushbuck, monkeys and baboons, along with the accompanying predators lion, leopard, hyena and jackal.
                Take a river cruise – and you’ll experience the park, and the animals, from another vantage point. Here you’ll get up close and personal with hippo, crocodile and a mind-boggling array of water birds.
                Over 460 bird species have been recorded in the park, making it one of Africa’s premier venues for bird Safaris. Common species to be seen include the Sacred ibis, Egyptian Geese, the ubiquitous cormorants and darters, Spur-winged Geese, pel’s Fishing Owl, carmine Bee-eaters, most members of the kingfisher family, all the rollers, the unmistakable Fish Eagle, the Martial Eagle, and many members of the stork family.

                The Chobe River rises in the northern Angolan highlands, travels enormous distances before it reaches Botswana at Ngoma. Like the Okavango and Zambezi rivers, the Chobe’s course is affected by fault lines that are extensions of the Great Rift Valley. These three mighty rivers carry more water than all other rivers in Southern Africa.

Times to visit Chobe:

March – May
Victoria Falls, only an hour’s drive away, thunder at their maximum flow and are at their most dramatic.
May – August
With cooler evenings and sunny days this period is popular with visitors to view wildlife.
September – October
The dry season reaches its peak and Chobe’s enormous elephant and buffalo herds gather on the banks of the Chobe.
December – March
The ‘green season’ the summer rains brings vibrant birdlife and a profusion of plant life.

Day 1, 2 & 3 MOBILE CAMPING – NXAI PAN National Park

On arrival you will transfer from the Maun to Nxai Pan National Park. There is nothing here before the supply team arrives, but they travel ahead to set up camp, spacious meru tents with twin beds, fitted with sheets, blankets and warm duvets. The bathroom is ensuite, with a bush bucket shower, and a “long drop” toilet. A fibre-glass base sits over a deep hole, providing a toilet seat and we supply a bucket with ashes and a scoop to maintain a clean environment.

Game drives are conducted in open sided 4 x 4 vehicles ensuring maximum visibility. After tea we embark on the afternoon game drive. As the sun sets on the African savannah, we enjoy sundowners and head back to camp for dinner. Three course meals are cooked over an open fire and dinner is served either in the marquee tent or under the stars. The evening is spent around the fire listening to the sounds of the wild, discussing the events of the day.

At dawn, we have an early light breakfast, and then head out on our morning activity, returning for a hearty brunch. Then there is a short siesta time to relax, and your showers are filled with warm water at your request, usually in the afternoon, as the morning breeze can be quite cold. As the midday hours are very hot, most of the animals retreat to the shade and are harder to spot during this time. If the roads are passable we will go and see the famous Baines Baobabs. The seven giant trees dominate a small island on the edge of the open grassless Kudiakam Pan.

We spend two days here at Nxai Pan, exploring the pans that were once part of the great lake that covered central Botswana. Perhaps the focal point of Nxai Pan is the water hole, situated only two kilometres from the entrance gate, in the midst of a large grassy plain which is dotted with a few clumps of short umbrella thorn trees. The park is located just north of the Maun-Nata main road and adjoins the Makgadikgadi Pans on its northern border. The pan itself is a fossil lake bed about 15 sq. miles (40sq. km) in size. The landscape is dotted with clusters of umbrella acacia trees and Mopane woodland in the north. During the rains from November to April, the pans become covered in grass - a landscape typical of the Kalahari. Nxai Pan is well known for a huge springbok population, as the short-cropped grasses can testify, and extraordinarily large herds of giraffe with up to 30 in a group. Also to be seen are blue wildebeest, gemsbok, eland, greater kudu and red hartebeest. The more commonly seen predators are spotted hyena, cheetah, leopard and jackal with the elusive brown hyena a rare treat.

Day 4 Transfer back to Maun

After breakfast, we drive back to Maun to connect to your onward flight to your next destination.

Nxai Pan National Park and Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

Situated west of Maun on the main road to Nata, these two Parks are littered with fossil pans that are covered by short grasses that attract hundreds of zebra and wildebeest every year to graze, this migration is an essential part to the survival of these herds, as the water dries up in the Savuti and Chobe areas they make their way south, for here there are fewer predators, lush grazing and water! The Parks of the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan are also host to Steenbok, Oryx (Gemsbok) and Springbok. The big cats are represented with the cheetah flourishing in the vast open expanses of Nxai Pan, and most recently the Lions of Nxai pan featured in the IMAX movie “Roar”, the hugely popular giant screen format film from National Geographic and Tim Liversedge Productions.

When Nxai Pan was first declared a game reserve in 1971 it was small at only 1 676 km², but in 1992 it was enlarged to its current size of 2578 km² and was changed to its National Park status. Baines Baobabs were named after the famous painter and explorer of the last century Thomas Baines, who painted this unusual group of baobabs in 1862 during his journeys through Southern Africa. This remarkable cluster of trees, also known as Seven Sisters, has been immortalized by other painters as well, including Prince Charles. Today, the scene that captivated Baines, inspiring him to record the formation on canvas, is little changed and still attracts the attention of visitors, although now the baobabs are recorded on film. The seven giant trees dominate a small island on the edge of the open grassless Kudiakam Pan. They used to be an ideal picnic spot for visitors, but now that this area has been incorporated in the national park this is no longer permitted, and it will be years before the area recovers from the damage of uncontrolled camping.

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park lies to the south of Nxai Pan National Park and covers a vast area of 7 800 km² it was established in 1971. In June the herds of zebra and wildebeest start their west ward migration to the Boteti region of the pans, this once great migration darkened the savannah for days but sadly due to the encroachment of humans, the destruction of habitat and the construction of the controversial “Buffalo Fence” in the 1970’s the annual migration is but a shade of what it used to be.

A visit to Botswana is not complete without a trip to the pans, the sense of vulnerability, witnessing the vast nothingness gives a new perspective.

Moremi Game Reserve is a hour and half drive away offering spectacular game viewing opportunities.

The Delta is on our doorstep – a 45 minute drive will see one at the Boro Poler station where you are able to participate in a traditional Mokoro trip.

Maun

Traveling time to Maun: 15 minutes

Almost all tourists entering the Okavango do so through Maun, situated at the gateway to the Delta and Moremi Game Reserve. Maun is the tourism capital of Botswana and the administrative centre of Ngamiland. It is also the headquarters of countless safari and air-charter operations whose signs and offices dot almost every intersection, particularly towards the airport.

Since the town’s establishment in 1915 as the tribal capital of the Batawana people, Maun has had a rough and ready reputation as a hard-living ‘Wild West’ town servicing the local cattle ranching and hunting operations. But with the growth of the tourism industry and the completion of the tar road from Nata in the early 1990s, Maun has developed rapidly, losing much of its old frontier town character. It is now home to over 30,000 people.

Regular supplies of almost everything can be bought in Maun, and the town boasts several good shopping centers, filling stations, as well as car and four-wheel-drive vehicle hire. The Maun Airport, which was officially opened in 1996 after extensive renovations, is – if one counts the light aircraft charters to the various Delta camps – one of the busiest airports in Southern Africa.

Maun History

The name Maun is derived from the San word “maung”, which means “the place of short reeds”. The village began in 1915 as the capital for the Tawana people. The capital was moved from Toteng after glorious victory over Ndebele King Lobengula.

This metropolis is now spread out along the wide banks of the timeless Thamalakane River where red lechwe can still be seen grazing next to local donkeys, goats and cattle.

Areas of interest in and around Maun include the small Maun Game Reserve which covers just 8km2 of woodland. It follows the Thamalakane riverbank upstream from the Best Western Riley’s Hotel and includes the original “Place of Reeds” from which the Town takes its name. The reserve is open every day and is traversed by numerous walking Trails. Various cultural tours can be arranged, where one would have the opportunity of learning more about the customs of the locals.

The Chalets

All chalets have custom designed ceiling fans and in room safes. Of the 20 chalets, 8 chalets are set on a raised platform that overlooks the old Didibakwe river and are built on the northern boundary of the lodge under the dappled shade of the Ilala Palm trees.
Of these 8 chalets there are 2 Luxury Chalets on offer. These boast majestic outdoor showers and ball and claw feature baths.

12 A-framed stoned thatch chalets are set on the southern boundary of the lodge. These unique chalets have semi open bathrooms and stoned verandas.

The Safari Tents

10 luxury safari tents are built on raised wooden platforms which are nestled under the lodges many Marula trees. These unique tents feature en suite bathrooms and all amenities offered in any of the lodge’s chalets.

The Camp Site

The campsite surroundings offer peace and tranquillity with backdrop being that of the Botswana night sky. The lodge’s campsite is able to accommodate 150 pax and the ablution area’s are stylish with semi open showers offering hot and cold water for that true African feeling. The campsite, however, does not have electricity points.

Activities

The shady tree canopy surrounding the lodge is a hive of activity, with a bird feeding area and active water feature providing the bird watcher with the opportunity of viewing a variety of species from the comfort of either the pool deck, open bar or restaurant. The Helmeted Guineafowl, Crested Francolin, Yellow Hornbill, Pied and Arrowmarked Babblers, Glossy Starling, Meyers Parrot and Paradise Whydah are just some of the species you will encounter during your stay at the lodge.

Sunset

When the sun sets and the birds retire to their nests, it's the turn of the large family of nocturnal bush babies to entertain you at their feeding table. Your evening meals can be enjoyed at the 'à la carte' restaurant with a typical braai (barbecue) buffet every Saturday night in the boma area.

Bird Watching

For keen bird watchers and naturalists, Nata Lodge offers open vehicle, three hour excursions into the Nata Sanctuary. Mammal species in the sanctuary include antelope such as kudu and springbok, as well as springhares, jackals, foxes and monkeys. However the main attraction is the abundance of bird life. Around 165 bird species, including king-fishers, eagles, ostriches, pelicans, spoonbills and both greater and lesser flamingos, have been recorded

Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

This area incorporates a multitude of salt pans and vast grass plains dotted by palm islands and forms the Great Makgadikagidi which comprise the largest area of salt pans in the world covering some 37 000 sq km in overall extent. It is the last vestiges of Africa’s largest inland sea and exudes an atmosphere of antiquity and mystery.

The Nata Sanctuary

The Nata River delta feeds the Sua Pan in the Nata sanctuary and forms the breeding ground for a host of water birds including pelicans and flamingo in their thousands, transforming the shore line into a pink haze blending into the western sky. The Western Cape has endless sandy beaches. The combination of the two oceans offers a variety of beaches, all of which are very accessible from the Chapmans Peak Beach Hotel.

Hout Bay Beach

Just across the road from the hotel! The white sandy beautiful beach, popular with families, stretches from Chapmans Peak Drive to the Hout Bay Harbour and has spectacular mountain surrounds. Visitors can enjoy a cool swim, sunbathing and beach games. There are a number of water sports available on the beach. The best spot for swimming is the section closest to the hotel. Horse riding can be arranged along this beach, an amazing experience. Many whales have been spotted in the Bay. This occurs during the months of August - October. Whale spotting can be enjoyed from your private balcony in the sea facing rooms.

Llandudno Beach

Just a 10 minute drive from Chapmans Peak Beach Hotel. This beach is considered to be one of the most picturesque beaches in South Africa, and consistently makes it into the top 10 beach in South Africa. Very popular with surfers but also ideal for picnics enjoying the sunset. This beach is patrolled by lifeguards due to strong currents.

Sandy Bay Beach

This can be reached by a 20 minute walk from Llandudno. It is totally enclosed by sand dunes and enjoys a degree of wind shelter. It is Cape Town´s main nudist beach, but this is not a necessity to enjoy the beach!

Camps Bay Beach & Glen Beach

Just a 15 minute drive from Chapmans Peak Beach Hotel. This beach is situated on the edge of Table Mountain, bordered with palm trees. Camps Bay Beach is an activities beach, hosting events such as Beach Volleyball championships. Glen Beach is a popular spot for surfers. Across the road from the beach the promenade offers a number of trendy restaurants, cafes and bars. This beach is the most accessible of all beaches, and consequently can be a busy spot.

Clifton Beach

Just a 20 minute drive from Chapmans Peak Beach Hotel. Clifton consists of four beaches, Clifton 1 to Clifton 4, which are separated by rocks and are totally sheltered from the wind. The fashionable beaches are popular with tourists and locals, and is often called the St Tropez of Cape Town. All of the beaches are accessible via steep stairs. The fourth beach is the most popular with families since it has the least steps.

Noordhoek Beach

Just a 15 minute drive South over the scenic Chapmans Peak Drive. The long sandy beach stretches for 8 km´s across Chapmans Peak to Onetime. This is a spectacular open beach, perfect for walking and horse riding. The waters are hazardous, but are still popular with some adventurous surfers.

The Kommetjie end of Long Beach is one of the most popular surfing spots in the Peninsula, attracting surfers, long boarders, body-boarders and swimmers as well.

Boulders Beach

Just a 30 minute drive from Chapmans Peak Beach Hotel. The beach is situated just past Simon´s Town en-route to Cape Point, and is considered to be one of the best swimming beaches in Cape Town. It is also the home of the African penguins and a must-see spot.

Fish Hoek Beach

Just a 20 minute drive from Chapmans Peak Beach Hotel. This beach is popular for a variety of activities, including sailing, surfing, paddling, snorkeling, swimming etc. It is a warm-water beach, and hence very popular with the little ones.

Muizenberg Beach

Botswana, this beautiful place has always been my favorite and a world favorite for going on Safari. Just the vast wilderness, open spaces and free environment makes this a special place for doing a safari. Botswana just offers a experience that his hard to match anywhere else and the well known regions are all withing relatively easy reach of each other. The most well known regions include, The Okavango Delta, The Kalahari, Chobe Game Reserve, Moremi, Savute, Linyanti, The Makgadikgadi Pans and the Tuli region. My personal favorite is the Kalahari and Makgadikgadi Pans, just for the simple reason that these places really make you seem small and the vastness on offer is indescribable. Other place to visit include Mokolodi Game Reserve near the Capital, Gaborone, Khama Rhino Sanctuary, Mabuasehube, Tsodilo Hills, just but to name a few.

The most popular safari we have on offer from Lathita is a combination of wildlife, culture and sight seeing and does not only focus on wildlife like many of the competitor companies. South Africa’s Garden Route stretches from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape to Cape Town in the Western Cape. It is necessary to know that The Garden Route is sandwiched between the mountains and the Indian Ocean. The Outeniqua and Tsisikamma indigenous forests are a unique mixture of Cape Fynbos and Temperate Forest and offer hiking trails and eco tourism activities. Its pristine beaches, mountains, forests, lakes, rivers are an absolute holiday destination. It will drive you all the way to wooded shores of Tsitsikamma National Park.

The Coast from Mossel Bay to Tsisikamma National Park is more and more appreciated by the tourists. Named the Garden Route, this area is an authentic garden that is wild and pretty. I can discover the coast with forests and turquoise lagoons, beautiful meadows and with big mountains on the background. It is an incredible natural landscape, like we dream to see ‼‼ From Port Elizabeth, we crossed different cities like Plettenberg Bay, Knysna and Oudtshoom.

I saw that the Garden Route Safari Camp was ideally located between Port Elizabeth and Knysna in the heart of the Garden Route region. The adventure camp offers serenity or adventure depending on their mood, in a wonderful setting. This camp is close to great hiking trails, Tsitsikamma National Park, Nature's Valley and many great attractions. The camp is situated between the ocean and indigenous forest, giving you the best of both worlds. It is only a 2 hour drive along the N2 to the Nelson Mandela stadium and few minutes to a wonderful view on the Indian Ocean.

Along the coast, we stopped at the Tsitsikamma National Parkwhich is known for his podocarpe’s forests, one of the biggest trees of the World. It is also an old reserve which protects a rich ecosystem of lakes, dunes, beaches and coral reefs.

Then, we crossed Knysna town which is the most sea-side resort of the Garden Route. The Knysna Lagoon, linked to the ocean by a narrow channel, is surrounded by second homes and at some kilometers there, we can have a spectacular view on all the bay.

Finally, we arrived in the Little Karoo which is located 60 km to the north of George by the N10 road and the pass of Outeniqua. Oudtshoorn is the principal city of Little Karoo. The landscapes are totally different where the region is more dry and inhabited. This region is slightly away from the Garden Route which is more renowned. It is an ostrich breeding region where I can see numerous farms which are become tourist activities for a lot of people like an ostrich ride that I can taste. It was a funny experience but very difficult.

To conclude, this first experience on the Garden Route was fantastic and if you come here in South Africa, you have to visit it because it is unique and I advise you to do that and to choose The Garden Route Safari Camp for a real adventure trip.

Klein Karoo National Arts Festival

This past week-end, we attended the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival which is an annual Afrikaans language national arts festival. It was the perfect weekend in Oudtshoorn for this annual event. It is a place for various performances such as cabaret, open-air concerts, plays and many more are on show. Professional and amateur artists perform their latest productions to overseas and South African audiences. So, it was very easy to spend our two entire days there. This festival welcomes each year a lot of families including kids of all ages. Oudtshoorn is the principal city of Little Karoo. This region is slightly away from the Garden Route. It has a wealth of beauty and renowned also for its wine. That is the reason people, like us, drank a lot of wine during this festival.

Once we got in, we were handed a program that was really informative and laid out all the events, times and locations in an easy-to-find format. We arrived on Saturday evening, just for the aperitif hour, that we took in a pretty bar where there were a lot of happy people who drank, danced and sang listening to different artists on the stage. I discovered the Afrikaans culture, the Afrikaans music and the different traditions. We walked all around the festival, did shopping, and met good persons… It was a great experience ‼‼‼

Day 1 - 2: Maun: Nxai Mobile Camp

Day 1 – Nxai Pan:
Upon arrival in Maun you will transfer to Nxai Pan National Park. You accommodation will consist of a mobile camp.
The focal point of Nxai Pan is the water hole, situated in the midst of a large grassy plain which is dotted with a few clumps of short umbrella thorn trees. Here, and within the mopane woodland, lion, giraffe, kudu, impala, ostrich, fascinating birdlife and large numbers of springbok, together with a good population of jackal, bat-eared fox and numerous smaller creatures, are permanent residents. Once the rains have started, gemsbok, elephant and zebra migrate to the area. At that time, zebra are present in thousands and drop their young at Nxai Pan, rivalling the spectacle of the multitude of young springbok, to further enhance game-viewing opportunities. Whilst many parks are not considered to be at their best during the rains, Nxai Pan becomes a veritable Garden of Eden during the rainy season.

Day 2 – Nxai Pan:
Today you will explore the Nxai pan area. You will also visit the Baines’ Baobabs. Baines Baobabs, made famous by the explorer / painter Thomas Baine in the last century. These seven enormous Baobab trees are clustered on a small rise next to a dry pan. The Baines Baobabs have been incorporated into the Nxai Pan National Park to protect the trees for future generations.Overnight at the mobile camp at Nxai Pan.

Day 3 - 4: Moremi: Mankwe Bush Lodge

Mankwe Bush Lodge are located on the eastern border of the famous Moremi Reserve. Positioned on a slight incline within a forest area that gives a fantastic view of the local mopani bush Mankwe bush lodge offers luxury tented chalets with a rustic look and feel for that true African experience. Each chalet has also been cleverly positioned on an incline facing the setting sun, which makes sitting on your porch at dusk an ideal time to unwind.
There are seven elevated, luxury, tented chalets available, each of which sleeps two. Each chalet has an en-suite bathroom, which includes a warm shower and all commodities. A viewing platform on each chalet provides a beautiful setting from which to enjoy sunsets over the bush for as far as the eye can see.

Day 3 - Moremi:
Today you will depart from Nxai Pan and be on your way to Moremi Nationa Park. Here you will overnight at Mankwe Bush Lodge.

Day 4 – Moremi:
After an early breakfast you will start exploring the Moremi Game Reserve. You day will be filled with game viewing in this area famous for its great diversity in fauna and flora.

Day 5 - 6: Moremi: Mboma Boat Station

West of Third Bridge is a large, long island, circled by a loop road which stretches for about 50km around it. There's a spur to this at the north end, and a short cut back to Third Bridge halfway round. It's worth spending a day here, as Mboma's environments are varied and beautiful, though different from the floodplain loops nearer to Xakanaxa. I've had great sightings of cheetah on the northern side of the island, and the south is said to be a popular haunt of buffalo herds.

Day 5 – Okavango Delta:
This morning you will leave for Mboma Boat Station via Moremi Game Reserve. From Mboma you will explore the Okavango Delta flood plains by mokoro for 2 hours. After this wonderful experience you will board a motorboat and travel through the lagoons and channels on your way to the island. Sundowners will be enjoyed while travelling to your destination. Overnight at Mboma mobile camp.

Day 6 – Okavango Delta:
Today you will go on a full day excursion on the Okavango Delta with a motor boat. You will enjoy bird watching and exploring the lagoons and channels. You will also visit the Godikwe heronry breeding Island.
The delta environment has large numbers of animal populations that are otherwise rare, such as crocodile, red lechwe, sitatunga, elephant, wild dogs, buffalo, wattled crane as well as the other more common mammals and bird life

Day 7 - 8: Moremi: Mankwe Bush Lodge

Today you will leave Mboma behind and go back to Mankwe. On your way to Mankwe you will do a game Drive through to Maremi Game Reserve via the North Gate and have a picnic lunch ad Khwai River.
The Khwai River is one of the major rivers of the delta in Botswana, though it occasionally dries up, leaving a few hippo pools to await the fresh waters of the new season.

Day 9: Savute: Savuty / Linyanti Mobile Camp

Leaving Mankwe behind you will be on your way to Chobe National Park. You will explore the Savuti wilderness and overnight in a mobile camp in Savute. Savute is located southern part of the Cobe National park, where a channel, now dry, once brought an annual pulse of water to the dry land. Open spaces, several water-points for animals and palatable grasses however ensure that Savute rewards the visitor with spectacular game-viewing. Lions and hyaenas are particularly plentiful, and their troubled relationship is the subject of the film “Eternal Enemies”, a wildlife classic by Derek and Beverley Joubert. Bird-viewing in the summer months, when rain inundates the marsh, can be especially rewarding.Linanti lies to the north of Savute along the Linyanti floodplain, at the tail-end of the Chobe River. With beautiful lagoons and river-frontage, this remote and secluded area is rich in bird-life and game, although concentrations cannot rival those of the river.

Day 10: Chobe National Park: Chobe Mobile Camp

After breakfast this morning you will be on your way to the Chobe Riverfront area, famous for it’s big herds of buffalo and elephant. The Chobe National Park, which is the second largest national park in Botswana and covers 10,566 square kilometres, has one of the greatest concentrations of game found on the African continent. Its uniqueness in the abundance of wildlife and the true African nature of the region, offers a safari experience of a lifetime
A major feature of Chobe National Park is its elephant population. The Chobe elephant comprise part of what is probably the largest surviving continuous elephant population. This population covers most of northern Botswana plus northwestern Zimbabwe. The Botswana's elephant population is currently estimated at around 120,000.

Day 11: Chobe National Park: Chobe Safari Lodge

Situated in the town of Kasane, Chobe Safari Lodge overlooks the perennial and beautiful Chobe River with its Caprivi floodplains. The Lodge boasts a variety of accommodation on offer. There are luxury en-suite River Rooms, the new and highly recommended Safari Rooms, and the thatched, more traditional, rondavels. All accommodation has en-suite bathrooms, while the Safari and River rooms also offering air-conditioning.

BOTSWANA SAFARI ADVENTURE

Paging through my favorite travel magazine my heart yearned for an African Safari….

We started planning our Botswana Safari about 6 months in advance. We were a party of 3, Johan, Pieter me… the Three Adventurers setting out to explore and experience the African Wilderness. Johan has lived in Botswana for a few years and he was therefore in charge of the route planning and accommodation booking. Pieter is from Cape Town and I am a Johannesburg yuppie, and neither of us has been on a real camping Safari in the Botswana Wilderness. The days drew closer and before I knew it, we were on the plane from Johannesburg to Gaborone. As we touched down in Botswana I felt a sense of anticipation and excitement for the adventure that lay ahead.

It took forever to pack the Jeep. By the time we strapped in the last jerry can, we looked like we were ready to cross the Sahara dessert. Each person had a small survival kit in the car. Johan’s back pack contained a Leatherman and a few cable ties, Pieter’s bag had an expensive video camera, spare batteries and a charger (he was the official movie maker for the trip) and my duffle handbag bared nothing more than a tube of sunscreen, moisturizer and a toothbrush. Our first destination, was the great expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pans. I have seen many places in Southern Africa, but nothing prepared me for the breath taking beauty of the pans. We arrived late evening and had to drive the last stretch in the dark. The moon was full, and reflected off the white powdery surface. The landscape seemed surreal – there is absolutely nothing, not a tree, a shrub or a rock– it looked like we were driving on the moon. We pitched our tents at the edge of the pan, and we felt like the only human beings at the rim of the world. This beautiful landscape however presented one serious problem, what to hide behind when you have to crouch when nature calls. We quickly made a rule – if anyone asked for the spade and TP (toilet paper), the other parties had to move to the front of the tents, and stay there until the coast is clear. As the flames of the camp fire danced over our tents, we sat chatting late into the night.

The next morning we rouse early and after a strong coffee and few Ouma rusks we were ready to push on. We drove along the edge of the pans towards to Bain’s Baobab. We made our camp under a clump of Baobab trees – the very trees where the explorer Thomas Bain laid his head, some hundred years ago, when he crossed the pans. In the late afternoon huge cumulonimbus clouds started building up and not before long a heavy thunder storm came down. The first drops exploded as they hit the arid earth, and within an hour or so the dry pans turned into a wetland, covered in 4 inches of water. We watched the landscape change before our very eyes, and we could not resist the urge to run out on the pan, splashing water and getting soaking wet from the rain. Pieter caught everything on camera, while me and Johan did a mock rain dance like true Bushmen, thanking the gods for the rain.

The next morning we set off to the north west, towards Chobe. Getting out of the pans was not as easy as driving in. The white powdery sand has turned into mud over night and the road was difficult to maneuver. This is where your 4x4 Safari driving skills get tested to the limit. As one stage we were traveling at 80km/hour, slipping and sliding across the mud, trying to go forward without loosing control of the Jeep. I was shouting to go slower, but Johan knew that if he loose traction now, we will get stuck. It is known that in some places the mud on the pans is so thick that a car can easily disappear before you very eyes, before help arrives.

By the time we hit the highway north, we have high on adrenalin and ready for more action. On the road between Gweta and Chobe, there is no fencing, and we often had to stop on the road to allow animals to cross– this is an African Wilderness – a true Botswana Safari experience. It is a long drive, and Pieter and I chatted away while Johan hummed along with the radio tunes.

We arrived late in the evening at the gates of the Chobe Reserve and after setting up camp, we made our way to the local pub. We sat on the deck, sipping Jin & Tonics, eagerly sharing our experiences of our Botswana Safari thus far, with other travelers. It is known that Jin & Tonic is a deterrent for mosquitoes and Johan used his fear of malaria as an excuse to one too many J&T’s. The next morning we set out to do game viewing. Chobe is a wilderness with an abundance of animals – we encountered herds of antelope, zebra and wildebeest grazing on the open plains. Chobe is renowned for it’s elephant population, counting over 3000. At one point we drove into a herd of elephant. I almost had a panic attack when a few boisterous males started pushing each other around a mere few feet from our Jeep. Luckily a mature male stepped in and quickly put the teenagers in their place. Pieter photographed the whole episode, and he felt confident that the pics were of the highest standard. To experience nature so up close and personal is an amazing experience. Pieter appreciated the scenery and snapped his camera at every opportunity – he was determined to find the perfect pick to send to National Geographic. We spend a few days in the reserve, mostly doing game drives during the day and relaxing next to the camp fire or going the local pub in the evening. By now we were getting into the rhythm of Africa.

From Chobe we set off to Victoria Falls in Zambia. Getting from Kasane to Livingstone we used the ferry. We arrived early at the river and took our place in the long queue. The ferry is a simple float that they use to transport vehicles and passengers across the river. The ferry is alive with people and action, there is food stalls, live chickens and goats and vehicles are ordered around to optimize on space on the ferry. We were the last vehicle onto the boat, and the Jeep was parked precariously at an angle on the ramp, which was hoisted high up into the air, when we crossed the white water. As I took my seat on the ferry I sat next to you young boy chewing on a sugar cane.

By the time we hit Livingstone I was ready to enjoy a hot bath and a soft bed. Being on a Botswana safari is marvelous, sleeping in a tent and using a make shift, hand held shower for a week is great fun and a wonderful adventure, but I was ready to enjoy a little bit of luxury. So there was a slight change in plans, rather than another camp site, I was treating my fellow safari-goers to a night in Zambezi Sun. As I laid in the hot bubble bath, soaking away the dust I closed my eyes to replay the adventures of the past few days.

The high light for our safari was the visit to one of the Seven Wonders of the World – the majestic Victoria Falls, also known as the smoke that thunders. You can hear the roar of the waterfall from miles away. As we walked down the foot path the sound became so load that we had to shout to speak. Nothing could have prepared me for the sight. From between the trees I could see the water curtain crashing down the gorge, creating a thick mist and rainbow above the water. I was in total awe and felt in touch with my creator. After I finished taking about 3 reels of film, of me in any every imaginable pose, with the Falls as the back drop, we made our way to the African craft market. This is a shopper’s haven, and if you have good negotiation skills you are sure to pick up some bargains. For a mere 200 Pula I bought the most beautiful male & female pair wooden sculptures, which would find a special place in my small house, once I get home (as if I did not have enough memorabilia from past safaris).

The next day we tackled the mighty Zambezi, to do white water rafting. After the safety talk, we were ready to launch our rafts. We were in a young, strong group (4 Yanks and the Three Adventurers) and we were ready for some REAL adventure. As we paddled our way into the stream I realized how powerful the Zambezi River flows. For the first hour of the trip we paddled casually along, enjoying the sunlight, making jokes and appreciating the view from the river gorge. Our skipper, Themba told us interesting folk stories about Yumi Yumi, the rivier god of the Zambezi. At rapid No 7, also known as the “washing machine” we got into trouble and no matter hard we paddled, the water washed us up side down, in side out and our raft flipped. Everybody was tossed into the white foam. For a few moments I was disorientated and I could feel my heart pumping as I gulped for air. My body was flushed with adrenalin as I tried to swim. Within seconds I could feel Themba’s hands grabbing my life vest, and I was pulled back onto the raft. The team laughed and shouted of joy. We felt on top of the world – invisible to the power of Yumi Yumi. The rest of the day we paddled through a few more rapids, had a picnic lunch on a small “beach” and enjoyed the landscape. By late afternoon we landed the rafts at our final destination. We were already tired from the day’s adventure and still had to walk up the gorge to reach the vehicles. The winding footpath up the hill was more like a makeshift ladder, with branches knocked into the incline to assist with the “walk”, which in many sections had to be approached on all fours. Eventually we arrived at the top where we were met by a cold beer and smiling faces. It was an adventurous day, and we arrived back at the hotel exhausted but in high spirits.

All too soon we reached the end of our safari. It’s been a glorious 12 days in Botswana and Zambia. We have seen so much, experience a great deal and learned all the words to the songs on Allanis Morriset’s Ironic album (we spend a lot of time in the car driving between destinations). The only thing that remained for us was the long drive back to Gaborone. On the way back we were quite, each busy with his/her own thoughts and trying to store as much information as possible about this Safari experience, in our minds.

When I eventually boarded my flight back to Johannesburg I was sad, but I had my wooden sculptures, my white water rafting video, several reels for wonderful photographs and the knowledge that I will be back.

Dear Woudi,

Thanks so much for organizing a great trip. It was really everything Iasked for and more. Ihave tried to copy and paste the questionnaire, but it doesn't even download properly, as I don't have Word on my computer. Also, my printer doesn't work and Lucie'sc omputer also crashed. We are therefore unable to print it to even send to you. We don't really have many comments to add anyway. The only place we would not recommend to stay at is the last one, the log cabin place. It was really nice and the people were nice, but it was too hot and sticky, even with the small fan. We had a lot of trouble sleeping there as a resultof the heat and also because there were so many mosquito's. We arrived without one bite and left totally covered in mosquito bites. Maybe you should only send people there in the winter.

Out of the attractions, we were only disappointed in two. The Cango Caves and Monkeyland. These were 2 places I picked, so it's not your fault. They just weren't what we expected. The elephantback safari was definitely my highlight and it lived up to and beyond anyexpectations I had. The place/people and elephants were incredible and I definitely think you should add that to any future tours.

Arnold was very knowledgeable as a guide. We would definitely recommend him. The only thing I can suggest is that you make sure the guides know what they can get into for free or for a cheaper price. I paid to go on the funicular at Cape Point, while Arnold walked up the pathway. He was not aware that I could have gone on it for free if he had showed his travelguide card. There was a sign when I paid, saying it was free for S.A. travel guides/tours. I had to pay, as he was not with me and they wouldn't have given my money back afterwards. I understand that only certain things are included in the tour, but the guides should still use their access if they could get usin free. You can definitely give both our names/e-mails as contacts if anyone has questions about any aspects of the tour. Thanks once again for all the work you put in. It was really nice to meet you at the airport. We will send a CD of some of the pictures, for you and Arnold, when we get achance to organize them.

Day 1: Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana

Violence in South Africa – the truth behind the news

A message to the tourism industry concerning current events in South Africa, from Mike
Speed, President of the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association I am sure all of you have been watching with increasing concern, as I have, the television news bulletins that have been reporting on the current violence being experienced in South Africa. My message to you is that this violence has been confined to very specific areas, and has not affected popular tourism areas.
As usual, the news on television reports the truth – but not the whole truth. And some perceptions are being created concerning tourism that are most certainly not true.

1. The South African tourism industry is very much open for business. We are all conducting business as usual, obviously with a special regard to client safety. The current unrest has been very localised and restricted to very limited and specific areas; mainstream tourism areas (including all airports) have NOT been affected, and it is very unlikely they will be.

2. It is still safe to visit South Africa, with our vast array of attractions, wildlife and scenic beauty; and we all stand ready to welcome our guests with open arms. There is no need at this stage for anyone to cancel any tourism activity. It is sensible for us all to proceed cautiously, and keep informed on a daily basis regarding developments. In particular it would be sensible to proceed with caution with regard to township activities, and be sensitive to local developments. Whilst this xenophobic violence is a serious crisis, there is quite simply no need for blind panic and total doom and gloom in the tourism sector. And you can be confident in advising your partners and customers accordingly. Please go out and communicate this as widely and actively as possible.

3. The South African government has today decided to deploy the army, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), in areas where they are most needed. This is welcome news. The SANDF has a great deal of hard-won experience in handling situations of this kind, gained in its extensive work in peacekeeping in many countries. They are both well trained and well equipped to assist the police, who have already done good work and arrested many troublemakers, and we are confident the SANDF will very soon help the police to get the situation under control.

It is unacceptable to all decent South Africans that people should be persecuted in 2008 in this country because of their race or nationality. We, as an association and the inbound tourism industry, condemn in the strongest possible terms this appalling behaviour - these mobs do not represent us as South Africans, and our people demand that these thugs must be swiftly brought to justice. The police and army have the unreserved support of the vast majority of the population.
It would be a huge tragedy if all the hard work that has gone into marketing South Africa in recent years was to go to waste. Indaba 2008 shattered last year’s record with more than 13,200 delegates attending this year’s show compared to last year’s 12,340, so confirming Indaba’s status as one of the top three travel shows in the world, and certainly Africa’s top travel trade show. The programme was well organised and overall a very good event.
Many of the people who have benefited from the growth in tourism are enterprising ordinary people who have started their own small businesses, and they are the people who will suffer most from any downturn in tourism. We ask you all, most sincerely, not to make any hasty decisions for future tourism plans until the situation is resolved. South Africa needs you, as her friends, to support the tourism industry in difficult times. Tourists do more good by coming to our country, and continuing to build our industry than they do by staying away.

In Africa, everyone is a welcome guest.

Botswana Safari Destination - The Central Kalahari

Larger than Denmark or Switzerland, and bigger than Lesotho and Swaziland combined, the 52,800 square kilometre Central Kalahari Game Reserve, which was set up in 1961, is the second largest game reserve in the world. Situated right in the centre of Botswana, this reserve is characterised by vast open plains, saltpans and ancient riverbeds. Varying from sand dunes with many species of trees and shrubs in the north, to flat bushveld in the central area, the reserve is more heavily wooded in the south, with mophane forests to the south and east. Rainfall is sparse and sporadic and can vary from 170 to 700 millimetres per year.

The people commonly known throughout the world as Bushmen, but more properly referred to as the Basarwa or San, have been resident in and around the area for probably thousands of years. Originally nomadic hunters and gathers, the lifestyle of the Basarwa has gradually changed with the times and they now live in settlements, some of which are situated within the southern half of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Government is, however, encouraging these people to move to areas outside the reserve in order that they may be provided with modem facilities, schools, clinics, etc. and to integrate them into modern society.
Other fairly recent residents were Mark and Delia Owens, who spent many years in the Deception Valley area of the park undertaking research mainly on brown hyaena. They set up their camp in the northern section of Deception in a prime "tree island", however tree islands are no longer used for camping in these days of more environmental awareness. The Owens' book, "Cry of the Kalahari" brought the attention of readers to this previously little-visited area and even today many people refer to the Central Kalahari simply as Deception. The name "Deception" comes from a pan the dry surface of which sometimes appears convincingly full of water until one gets right to the edge.

Trans-Kalahari Travel
The main wildlife concentrations are to be found in the tourist areas in the northern half of this vast reserve but it is possible for adventurous and completely self-contained visitors to travel through the reserve between Khutse on the southern boundary to the northern section - a journey that takes a minimum of two days of 4x4 wilderness travelling. Undeveloped campsites are available for overnight stops at Molapo, Gope, Bape and Xaka. Those visitors wishing to travel trans-Kalahari should note that, apart from being self-contained with all fuel, food and water, they should only travel in a group of two or more vehicles with basic spares and survival aids.

How to get there
There are three entry points to the reserve, the one through Khutse in the south, then a western entrance through Xade and also in the northeast through Matswere. Access to Xade, where there are two undeveloped campsites near the Xade Wildlife Camp, is made by turning off east from the Ghanzi-Kang road about 36 kilometres south of Ghanzi where indicated by signpost. Xade is reached after following this loose sandy track for 160 kilometres, taking about three hours for the full journey from Ghanzi. Visitors should fill up with fuel at Ghanzi and ensure that they have sufficient for their entire stay. On arrival at Xade visitors are required to check in at the tourist office in the Wildlife Camp.
Access to Matswere can be made via Rakops, where petrol and diesel are available most of the time, 55 kilometres from the check-in point at Matswere. Rakops can be accessed from the north from Maun - Motopi - Kumaga - Tsoe, or from the south from Mahalapye - Serowe - Letlhakane - Mopipi. Matswere can also be accessed from Maun by travelling 57 kilometres east, turning right at the Makalamabedi junction, continuing for 20 kilometres to the village and turning right on the western side of the veterinary fence. The fence is followed south for some 80 kilometres of sand track to the Kuke corner veterinary gate, after which a further 21 kilometres down the eastern boundary of the reserve takes the visitor to the entrance gate which is then only 9 kilometres from Matswere. This "short cut" from Maun takes about three and a half hours travelling time.

Camping facilities
Matswere is the access point for designated but undeveloped campsites in the region of Deception Valley, Sunday Pan, Leopard Pan and Passarge Valley, whilst the campsites at Piper Pan can be accessed from either Matswere or Xade. New tracks and campsites have been opened up along the Passarge Valley, where game viewing can be most rewarding, and south from the Passarge waterhole area through to link up with the Piper Pan/Deception road. It is along this latter route that the new Tau campsite has been opened in an area that well reflects the very spirit of the Central Kalahari.
Plans have been made to put in rustic pit latrines to service most of these undeveloped campsites, but until this development has been completed, visitors dig their own mini-latrine to ensure they leave no signs of being there, particularly where toilet paper is concerned. Firewood may be collected from well-wooded areas but not from tree islands.
The ashes from campfires must be buried before vacating a campsite, combustible rubbish burnt and non-combustibles carried back to the pit at the entrance gate. Water for purposes other than drinking is available from the Wildlife Camp at Xade and at the Matswere entrance gate/tourist office. There is also a plan to develop some basic shower facilities at the Matswere entrance gate for visitors' use, but the provision of water for this purpose is, in common with most desert areas, a problem at present.
Wildlife
Game viewing for animals which include giraffe, brown hyaena, warthog, wild dog, cheetah, leopard, lion, blue wildebeest, eland, gemsbok, kudu, red hartebeest and springbok, is best between December and April, when the animals tend to congregate in the pans and valleys. Visitors are warned that sleeping in the open without a tent is dangerous and foolhardy and that they should keep their tents fastened to prevent snakes, scorpions, etc. from gaining entry. Foodstuffs, etc. should not be kept in the tent but should be closed into the vehicle to avoid the unwanted attentions of lions and hyaenas.
