The Walking Mobile Safaris have come to be known as THE wilderness experience of the South Luangwa. After 2 nights at Nkwali, the party drives up to the remote north of the park. For 5 days the safari follows the Mupamadzi River, covering approximately 10km a day. This clear river is a major tributary of the Luangwa. The area is remote and wild, the terrain and habitats varied and the game shy and unused to man. From ants to buffalo, a bird's nest to tracking a lion, you will learn the many facets of the bush.

The fully serviced mobile camp is extremely comfortable and well-equipped with walk-in tents and full bedding. The shower is under a tree and the loo is a long drop with a wooden throne. Meals of a high standard are served under the open sky. A final few nights at Tena Tena complete the safari.

Day 1: On arrival at Mfuwe International Airport your guide will meet you. The drive to Nkwali Camp is 1 hour through colourful local scenes of villages, agriculture as well as bush. Nkwali Camp has a wide view of the Luangwa River. Depending on your arrival time in the day you will enjoy a lunch looking out over the lagoon to the back of Nkwali or if in the afternoon for tea and the afternoon and night game drive.
Day 2: At dawn breakfast is served around the campfire. The morning walk or drive will leave soon after breakfast, entering the park by boat from the camp or by the nearby pontoon. The game in the area is excellent – and includes many family herds of elephants and the endemic species of giraffe, the Thornicroft Giraffe.
Day 3: After an early breakfast, you will be heading north to start your walking mobile which has become known as THE wilderness experience of the South Luangwa.
Day 4&5: Up at sunrise for the morning walk. The area is remote and wild, the terrain and habitats varied and the game shy and unused to man. From ant’s to buffalo, a bird’s nest to tracking a lion, you will learn the many facets of the bush.
Day 6&7: The camp will be moved again to camp 3 during the morning as you walk further down the river. The clear water Mupamadzi River is a major tributary of the Luangwa and all walks are led by an experienced naturalist and accompanied by an armed game scout.
Day 8: After an early breakfast, transfer to the Luangwa River crossing point opposite Tena Tena. This is a 4 to 5 hour drive. This remote and small camp lies within the National Park and enjoys a stunning location on a sweeping bend of the Luangwa River. From the thatched dining room and bar, guests can watch the elephants, hippo and antelope on the riverbank.



Day 9: Today is a chance to visit the spectacular lagoon, Buca Buca, where a whole morning can be spent quietly sitting while the game comes down to feed and drink.
Day 10: Being the last whole day at Tena Tena you resume game activities in the morning and evening with the possibility of visiting Kawaza village as an option to meet local people and experience life in a real non tourist village.
Day 11: Depending on your flight time you will be transferred by vehicle to Mfuwe Airport which is approximately 1.5 hrs drive from Tena Tena. Where possible we will incorporate a game drive.

We endeavour to make this safari the ultimate off-road adventure, where Land Rovers are blooded, where they come of age. Extinct habitats, water is gold, shade a luxury. Day 1: We meet at the Safari Lodge in Cape Town. Thereafter explore the Cape region; visiting the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, Cape Point and the penguin colony near Simon's Town. Lunch will be spent overlooking the ocean whilst enjoying the local cuisine. We end the sightseeing-filled day with a visit to Table Mountain. (Cable car own expense).
Day 2: Paternoster, Columnbine Nature reserve. A small reserve of vast beauty, of azure waters and stark sands. We spend the afternoon exploring the tidal pools and the small fisherman’s village called `Our Father`. A seafood feast beacons.
Day 3: Travel into the true remote wilderness area of the Western Cape. We Camp tonight in the Cedarberg Mountains. The afternoon is spent on a short walk to a waterfall, or a swim in one of the many rock pools or rivers. Today we relax, for tomorrow we walk.
Day 4: Today we explore the Cedarberg Mountains. Unique rock formation hikes, wine farms, trekking opportunities or just simply relaxing next to a mountain stream. We return to our camp after our excursion, and have a welcome swim.

Day 5: Head northwards for the border, and make for our campsite on the banks of the Orange River. After setting up camp, we cool off in the river. The rest of the afternoon is spent at leisure chasing Springboks around the bar.
Days 6 – 8: We enter the barren Richtersveld National Park via the 4x4 Helskloof route and make our way slowly towards the entry gate at Sendelingsdrift. We spend three days in this pristine wilderness, searching for unique Euphorbia and rare desert succulants. The days are hot, the nights cold, but the experience exhilarating.

Day 9: The Fish River Canyon. After exiting the South African side of this transfrontier park, we cross into Namibia and travel onto the second largest canyon in the world. After lunch and a siesta next to the pool, we head out towards the canyon. Sunset is spent enjoying the red sky and listening to the silence.
Day 10: Transverse the southern region of Namibia and travel the dusty road to one of the best-kept secrets in Africa: the red sands of the Kalahari. The Kaglagadi Transfrontier Park is one of the largest protected wilderness areas in Africa. The search begins.

Day 11: Rise with the sun and resume our search, often spending long periods waiting for that special moment at waterholes or in the dunes. The Kalahari Lion is the largest Lion found in the world and just to spend a moment with this black maned King of the Beasts is not only a privilege but also an experience that you will never forget. The Lion, the Raptors and the desert dwelling creatures will fascinate all wildlife enthusiasts. The game drive takes us north on the Nossob River.

Day 12: With full jerry cans of water and fuel, we embark on an expedition into the wilds of the Kalahari. The transfronteir bush camp in the Matopi region is our goal for the night. A wild camping night. En route, a hard earned brunch and siesta period to while away the heat of this unforgiving land. Late afternoon sees us sifting the red sands, searching for those who have not been found.

Day 13: A little jewel, but a precious jewel. After tedious big sand we finally reach the pearl, encased in its shell of sand. A pearl called Mabuasehube Game Reserve. After setting up camp we spend the day searching the pans and dunes, absorbing this desert. The Kalahari is a life changing experience, but in the Kalahari Desert, it is only the patient who is rewarded.
Day 14: Kuruman is our stop today. Depart early with pockets full of red sand, and journey southwards across sandy tracks into the maize farmlands of South Africa. Spend the late afternoon escaping the heat in the pool. Tonight we re-enter civilization, and enjoy a restaurant meal.

Day 15: First to Upington to restock, and then onto Augrabies Falls National Park. After lunch and siesta around the pools, we will head out to search for Eland, Giraffe, Gemsbok and Klipspringer Antelope. Witness the spectacular Augrabies Falls, where the mighty Orange River plunges over the granite gorge on its lonely journey to the Atlantic Ocean.
Day 16: A mountain of poison. Gifberg. Why poison? We spend the afternoon searching the answer to this question. Explore the San caves and mountain pathways, enjoying our last day of solitude. The splendor of the Namaqualand Flower Carpet in springtime is a sight to behold.
Day 17: The final day. The route takes the Land Rover past fields of Citrus and over steep mountain ranges towards a table like mountain. The safari ends upon arrival at your lodge in the afternoon.

Day-1: After an early breakfast, you will get ready for your departure to Kruger. The trip to Kruger will take approximately 6 to 8 hours depending on how much time is spent at sightseeing spots along the route i.e. Dullstroom, Lydenburg, Long Tom Pass, Sabie. By late afternoon you will enter the gates to Kruger National Park and do a short game drive to the Skukuza Camp site – your rustic home for the next few days. After setting up camp the guide will start the camp fire and you will assist with the preparations for a traditional “wors braai” (BBQ) and “pap” (porridge). With the sounds on the bush in the background you will fall asleep in your comfortable tent.

Day-2: As the sun peaks over the horizon you will wake up and enjoy a strong coffee with biscuits, before departing on a morning game drive. You will go in on a hunt for the Big 5, armed with your cameras, in search of the perfect shot. By mid-morning you will return to enjoy a brunch at the campsite. The rest of the day will be relax at the camp – do some bird watching or listen to the interesting, sometimes hilarious stories of African adventures, as told by your guide. Shortly before sun set you will again depart on a game drive in search of animals browsing on the sweet grasses or predators on the prowl.

Day-3: Another day in Africa, another day to explore and experience the wonders of this wildlife reserve. Today we will head south towards Berg-en-Dal Campsite. After packing up camp, we will depart to our new campsite. Berg-en-Dal is located in a different biosphere and will give you the opportunity to see a larger selection of animals. The drive south (±70km) will give you the opportunity to do game viewing en-route. By mid-day you will reach the campsite and assist with setting up camp. By dawn you will be sitting comfortably around the camp fire listing to the crackle of the flames mixed with the bush noises in the back ground.

Day-3: Following the morning game drive and brunch you will get ready for the drive back west towards Johannesburg. The road takes you through Nelspruit, Waterval Boven and Machadodorp. It is a scenic route and there will be time to stop for a picnic lunch and sightseeing en-route.

Makgadigadi Pans, an African Beauty.

Much of Makgadikgadi Pans National Park comprises nutritious grasslands attracting thousands of animals. It is however, an area of low rainfall and the Boteti River rarely flows to capacity, but often has perennial pools that attract waterbuck, bushbuck and resident hippos.
The area was once a superlake almost 100 feet (30 metres) deep, over an area of 30,888 sq. miles (80,000 square km). The climate changed and it 10,000 years ago Lake Makgadikgadi was well on the way to drying up. As the water evaporated, huge glistening salt-encrusted pans were left. These pans look as flat as a billiard table and stretch as far as the eye can see. Occasionally, this extraordinary landscape is dotted with rocky outcrops and large stranded sand dunes.

The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park includes a portion of these enormous Makgadikgadi Pans, which are almost devoid of human habitation. However, villages on the periphery and in between the pans is evidence that the area has supported people as far back as the stone age. Today the area contains large numbers of animals who migrate to grasslands in the west of the park after the rains.

Journeying into this magical land and across the desolate pans, you somehow feel its ancient mystique. The subtle hues at sunset transform Makgadikgadi into a surreal wonderland, which is unlike anywhere else. During the day the dusty pans, with whirlwinds skirting across a seemingly endless desert, offer the best way to come face to face with true isolation.
Makgadikgadi, the name of which implies a vast open lifeless land, is not without its folklore. There are stories of people setting out from Gweta to explore the land that lay between them and the Boteti River to seek a favourable environment in which to settle. They entered these great thirstlands at the driest time of year, drawn by what they perceived as large lakes of sparkling water on the horizon. Suffering badly from thirst, the lakes kept drawing them hurriedly on in their attempts to reach the life-giving water that always remained just ahead of them. Gradually, one by one, they fell and died.
But Makgadikgadi is not always dry. The pans, which are situated in half the south, east and northeastern areas of the park, fill with water during the rains from mid-November and mostly retain their water into April or May. The "thirstlands" are then transformed into great sheets of water, which attract a spectacular array of waterbirds and trigger dramatic migrations of wildebeest and zebra. It is unfortunate that this huge water spectacle becomes practically inaccessible by road at this time, but anyone fortunate enough to fly over the area during the wet season sees a water wonderland of incredible scenic beauty.
Makgadikgadi was initially state land. People have never been resident in its waterless interior, but in times of drought, surrounding villagers were permitted to graze their livestock within the area, withdrawing them to their homes when conditions improved. The area was declared a game reserve in 1970 and in December 1992, the boundaries were extended and National Park status was attained. The present park covers some 4,900 square kilometres.

VEGETATION
The park contains four main vegetation types; riverine woodland, scrubland, pure grassland and salt pans. The pans support palm groves and peculiar looking Baobab trees whose branches look more like roots, giving rise to the name 'upside down tree. These are interspersed with short spiky yellow grass found on rises between the pans, known as 'prickly salt grass'. This is extremely saline resistant to the extent that salt crystals can sometimes be seen on the leaves. The interior of the reserve comprises scrub and grassland with a few 'islands' of Real Fan Palms and Camel thorn acacia.

ANIMALS & BIRDS

From April to November game such as springbok, gemsbok, wildebeest and zebra move slowly from the pans area in the south east of the park, to the Boteti River on the western side. During this migration animals accumulate in their thousands. The heavily wooded areas beside the river also contain shy antelopes like duiker and bushbuck.
If the rains arrive with enough force and river water floods into the Makgadikgadi salt pans, there is nowhere more complete in its transformation than here.Tiny crustaceans hatch and algae blooms to provide food for the largest breeding flocks of greater and lesser flamingos in Africa.The surface of the pans turns a deep pink from 30,000 breeding pairs of these birds. This occurs mainly in the pans to the east of the National Park, particularly Sowa Pan. Other water birds are also abundant and a good place to see them is at Nata Bird Sanctuary, just off the main road at the northern end of Sowa Pan.
As animals and birds are most prevalent during the rainy season in areas normally inaccessible by vehicle, the prime objective in visiting this reserve is not to view game, but to experience true remoteness and absolute isolation. Makgadikgadi - a vast wilderness of space and timelessness.
During the rainy season there can be thousands of flamingo on the pans and the lodges have guides who can show you where you can see this wonderful sight. The variety of other bird life found in the Makgadikgadi is outstanding and the grasslands are home to a wide range of animals. The bird life is a specialist's dream - whitebacked and lappetfaced vultures, bateleur, ostrich, kori bustard, black korhaan and bronze winged courser, four species of sandgrouse and a startling variety of larks.

SEASONS
Both dry season and wet season visits to this park are recommended in order to witness the dramatic appearance of the pans at their driest and to experience the transformation to a water wonderland, and see the wildebeest and zebra migrations, in the wet season. Linking a few days in Makgadikgadi with a similar period of time in its nearby sister park, Nxai Pan, will give visitors a distinctly different experience.

Rainy Season: November to March the pans fill up and retain water until April or May. Much of the Makgadikgadi Pans area becomes inaccessible during the rainy season and the only way to see the spectacular flamingo flocks is by aircraft. It is extremely dangerous to venture into the pans during the rainy season unless you are with a guided experienced in the area. During a low-rainfall year, May, October and November are also acceptable.This area gets very hot during the day (up to °F (40°C), but is mild and pleasant at night.

Dry season: April to September is the dry season with strong winds from August to November.From April to July game viewing is best within the park and after that it moves to inaccessible areas. March to September are the best months to experience the pans. Winter is very pleasant during the day but ice-cold at night.

HOW TO GET THERE
The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is situated roughly halfway between Maun and Nata on the Francistown road in northern Botswana. A modest looking turnoff to the park's main entrance can be found 160 kilometres east of Maun and 45 kilometres west of the small village of Gweta, which has the nearest lodge accommodation, fuel and supplies.
Nata and Gweta lie on the main tar road between Francistown and Maun and are the closest towns to these pans. If you are driving on the pans it is best to let someone know where you are going and to take along water and a compass. Do not travel on the pans during or shortly after rain as you could quite easily end up losing your vehicle in the mud. Some tracks are very sandy and there are patches of black cotton soil so it is advisable to use a 4 wheel drive vehicle.
From turning off the main tar road, 8 kilometres of rough gravel road leads to the park entrance gate, where entry fees are to be paid. All roads within the park are rough and in many cases very sandy, so it is essential to have a 4x4 vehicle. It is also wise to carry water and travel in tandem with a second vehicle, as, if there should be a breakdown deep within the park, it may be a long wait before any other vehicle is likely to come along to assist.

WHERE TO STAY
Nata and Sua Pan Lodges are convenient for visitors to Sowa pan. They both also offer camping facilities and there is a campsite at Nata Sanctuary with ablutions and hot showers. Gweta Rest Camp and Planet Baobab Camp near Gweta have various types of accommodation and can offer trips on the pans with quadbikes.

Day-1: Livingstone, Zambezi Waterfront Lodge.
You will arrive in Livingstone and settle into your rooms and explore the environment.


Day-2: Livingstone, Zambezi Waterfront Lodge
Visit one of the seven wonders of the world on foot– Victoria Falls “the smoke that thunders”.
Afterwards we will visit the African Curio market to buy curios unique to Zambia.
In the afternoon you can get a bird’s view of the falls, from the wing of a micro light or just relax at the lodge.

Day-3: Livingstone Zambezi Waterfront Lodge
Today you will walk with the gentle African giants – Elephant Encounter.
Late afternoon you will enjoy a sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi River

Day-4: Linyanti (Namibia), Camp Kwando
It will take approximately 5 hours to drive to Linyanti. In the afternoon you will enjoy a

In the morning you will visit a traditional African Village. There after we will depart on a 4 hour scenic drive to Mahangu. Late afternoon you will go on a boat trip and visit Popa Falls.

Day-7: Okavango Delta, Guma Island Lodge
We will depart early in the morning to drive to Guma Lagoon. The drive will be approximately 5 hours. Along the route you will ample opportunity for landscape photography.

Day-8: Okavango Delta, Guma Island Lodge
The area has a rich bird life, so you can do bird watching, while you enjoy a full day Mokoro trip. The Mokoro trip will include an Island Walk.


Day-9: Okavango Delta, Oddballs Camp
We will depart early, to drive to Maun (5 hours). At Maun a pilot will take you on a 20 minute flight over the delta to the Lodge. The guide will not accompany you on this part of the trip.

Day-10: Okavango Delta, Oddballs Camp
Today you will do bird watching and go on a Mokoro trip. The rest of the time you will relax on the deck enjoying the island view.

Day-11: Moremi (Botswana), Mankwe Lodge
In the morning you will fly back to Maun to meet your guide. From there you will depart to Moremi, about 4 hours away. In the evening you will do a night game drive.

Day-12: Moremi, Mankwe Lodge
After breakfast you will take a guided walk to learn more about the plants, birds and animals in Africa. For the rest of the day you will go on a game drive and relax at the lodge.


Day-13: Makgadikgadi, Planet Baobab Lodge
We will depart very early from Mankwe to take the long drive to Makgadikgadi. The trip will include pit stops for taking photographs of the beautiful landscape and having refreshments. Depending on the time you arrive, you will go a Bushman Walk and do a Village Tour


Day-14 Makgadikgadi, Planet Baobab Lodge
Today you will explore Naix Nini Pans on quad bikes. Time allowing your guide will take you back to the pans in the afternoon in search of elephant and Baobab Trees.

Day 15: Chobe, Elephant Valley Lodge
It’s a 5 hour drive to Chobe, so best we leave early. Late afternoon you go on a sun set cruise on the Chobe river to view hippo’s and elephant.

Day-16: Chobe, Elephant Valley Lodge
Today you will take a day game drive and in the evening you will go on a night game drive.

Day-17: Livingstone, Zambia
After breakfast you will depart to Livingstone, crossing the Chobe river with a ferry.

Day 1-3: Super Tubes, Jeffreys Bay

Super Tubes Bed and Breakfast breaths a relaxed, informal and homely atmosphere. All rooms are en-suite with balconies.. The rooms boast twin or king-size beds, en-suite bathrooms, a private balcony with a magnificent sea view. The house consists of three floors. You will arrive in Port Elizabeth and collect your car from the airport and drive yourself to Super Tubes Guest Lodge, in Jeffreysbay. The first few days of your holiday will be spent doing leisurely beach walks or sitting on your private patio listing to the rhythmic roar of the ocean. You can explore the beautiful Garden Route and drive yourself to Tsitsikamma where a helicopter awaits you, to sweep you away on a scenic flight over the majestic Storms River Mouth.

Day 4-5: Kariega Game Reserve
