The Helmeted Guineafowl, Crested Francolin, Yellow Hornbill, Pied and Arrowmarked Babblers, Glossy Starling, Meyers Parrot and Paradise Whydah are just some of the species you will encounter during your stay at the lodge.

Sunset

When the sun sets and the birds retire to their nests, it's the turn of the large family of nocturnal bush babies to entertain you at their feeding table. Your evening meals can be enjoyed at the 'à la carte' restaurant with a typical braai (barbecue) buffet every Saturday night in the boma area.

Bird Watching

For keen bird watchers and naturalists, Nata Lodge offers open vehicle, three hour excursions into the Nata Sanctuary. Mammal species in the sanctuary include antelope such as kudu and springbok, as well as springhares, jackals, foxes and monkeys. However the main attraction is the abundance of bird life. Around 165 bird species, including king-fishers, eagles, ostriches, pelicans, spoonbills and both greater and lesser flamingos, have been recorded

Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

This area incorporates a multitude of salt pans and vast grass plains dotted by palm islands and forms the Great Makgadikagidi which comprise the largest area of salt pans in the world covering some 37 000 sq km in overall extent. It is the last vestiges of Africa’s largest inland sea and exudes an atmosphere of antiquity and mystery.

The Nata Sanctuary

The Nata River delta feeds the Sua Pan in the Nata sanctuary and forms the breeding ground for a host of water birds including pelicans and flamingo in their thousands, transforming the shore line into a pink haze blending into the western sky. Nata Lodge offers guided tours in open safari vehicles into the sanctuary, not to be missed.

Botswana...Safariland...

Botswana, this beautiful place has always been my favorite and a world favorite for going on Safari. Just the vast wilderness, open spaces and free environment makes this a special place for doing a safari. Botswana just offers a experience that his hard to match anywhere else and the well known regions are all withing relatively easy reach of each other. The most well known regions include, The Okavango Delta, The Kalahari, Chobe Game Reserve, Moremi, Savute, Linyanti, The Makgadikgadi Pans and the Tuli region. My personal favorite is the Kalahari and Makgadikgadi Pans, just for the simple reason that these places really make you seem small and the vastness on offer is indescribable. Other place to visit include Mokolodi Game Reserve near the Capital, Gaborone, Khama Rhino Sanctuary, Mabuasehube, Tsodilo Hills, just but to name a few.

The most popular safari we have on offer from Lathita is a combination of wildlife, culture and sight seeing and does not only focus on wildlife like many of the competitor companies. The destinations we will mostly include is Khama Rhino Sanctuary, Deception Valley, the Okavango Delta, Moremi, Makgadikgadi Pans and the Chobe. The safari can be done in a style suitable to the group, and choices or combinations of camping and luxury lodge accommodation are usually included.

Other safaris to Botswana include all the usually popular destinations and lodges and our travel consultants can package destinations according to individual requirements.

Come and enjoy and experience your next safari with us...

The pans are the remnants of the once great Lake Makgadikgadi: 80,000 square kilometres in extent, and up to 30 metres deep, this was the largest inland sea in Africa. In the wet season, this vast area of salt pans interspersed with low-lying grass islands is the destination of herds of migrating zebra. It has an unspoilt beauty unlike any other part of Africa. At PB, you can sleep in traditionally styled Bakalanga huts with en suite showers, curl up in a Bushmen hut complete in every detail, pitch your tent, or park your 4 x 4. You can light your own camp fire, or gather round the communal blaze in the lelwapa and enjoy a cool drink, then sling your own boerewors onto the fire or enjoy PB's unique Pan-African cuisine.Base yourself here and you can take guided walks and quad bike trips into the bush and the Pans with our expert Guides discovering the geological origins of what was once the world's largest ever super lake. Follow the palm trail created by elephant droppings as these ancient creatures trekked across the arid waste when the super lake dried up. Pick up, (and replace!), thousand year old flint spear heads left by the Stone Age hunters who were the region’s first inhabitants. Meals are taken in the adjacent dining area under the spreading branches of a morula tree.

The Okavango is a unique ecosystem of papyrus-lined waterways, knee-deep floodplains, water-lily lagoons, shady forest glades and rich savannah grasslands. Using Camp Okavango as your base, this intricate water wilderness can be explored and enjoyed. Camp Okavango is located right in the center of the Okavango Delta and is surrounded by channel systems and flood plains which form the core water supply to this delicate ecosystem throughout the year. Exploring the Okavango by mokoro, specially adapted boats or guided walking excursions on the islands surrounding Nxaragha Island will allow every visitor to the region the opportunity to truly experience what the Okavango Delta is all about. The main lodge building at Camp Okavango, which houses the reading lounge and cocktail bar, opens out onto an expansive outdoor lounge and fire place built under the shady boughs of huge Jackelberry trees. The elevated rooms are located along pathways which meander out to the left and right of the main lodge building. Each room has its own unique view into the lush Okavango forest from its own private deck. It is on the banks of the dry Savuti channel that Savute Safari Lodge peers out from amongst the beauty of gnarled acacia camel thorn trees. This channel has a bizarre history of drying up during good rains and having flood levels at other times. The beauty of this area, created by the silhouettes of the many dead trees which relied on sustenance from the water supply of past years, combined with the congregations of old bull Elephants, diversity of animals and abundance of predators makes Savute Safari Lodge a highlight destination for any safari traveller to Botswana. Geographically, Savuti is a place of mystery and great unkowns. The fascination which adds to this true African wilderness area – The Savuti Marsh, is a remnant of a vast inland lake, cut off from its traditional supply of water many years ago by the same movement of the earth`s tectonic plates that brought the Okavango Delta into existence. It is part of the Mababe Depression and is fed by the temperamental Savuti Channel, which has not seen flowing water since it dried up in 1982.

Chobe Game Lodge is built along the banks of the Chobe River and offers un-surpassing views of the Chobe River and floodplains from its numerous communal areas as well as all its guest rooms.
Chobe National Park`s wildlife roams in abundance and diversity. Because of this incredible location, when staying at Chobe Game Lodge, our guests have direct access to this amazing wildlife experience without having to enter and exit the National Park with every activity. Travel to Africa

Travel to South Africa

Promoting travel to South Africa has the potential of increasing and expanding your travel business tremendously. South Africa has so much to offer, and almost everybody thinks of "Safari" when talking to them about travel to South Africa. An African Safari is an opportunity of a lifetime. South Africa has preserved wide tracts of land for conservation; allowing visitors to witness and experience close encounters with African animals at home in their natural habitats. Many game reserves can be found around South Africa, all offering excellent opportunities and experiences. The Kruger National Park, the largest game reserve in South Africa at nearly 2 million hectares is home to an impressive number of species. The Big 5 - lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhino, are among these. Also to be seen are zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, cheetah, wild dogs and hippo. Private game reserves offer exclusive luxury accommodation in harmonious bush lodges or luxury tented camps. With most of these lodges in excellent settings, it is not uncommon to see game from your private viewing deck overlooking a waterhole. Game viewing takes place from open-air vehicles and a private game guide will ensure that the experience is unforgettable, getting you up close and personal with the wildlife. Before dark falls, watch the blazing African sunset melt away and darkness take its place as a lion roars in the distance. With every modern comfort, excellent cuisine and sipping South Africa’s delicious wines, the romance of Africa is certainly captured. Later around the campfire, recall and share the exciting experiences and game viewings of that day while listening to the calls of the night. To ensure that your clients have an "experience of a lifetime" and have peace of mind about traveling to South Africa, there are certain things you need to be aware of when booking your clients on a tour and safari to South Africa. It is important to know the tour operator you are booking with. I suggest that an agent book their clients' safari vacations through a company that is familiar to them, not just an unknown company that they might have stumbled upon on the internet, but one that they personally know or that has been recommended to them. It is even better if that company has an office within the United States. Being able to call that company on a toll free number to talk directly with a representative and have all your questions answered is so assuring!Client satisfaction is key in selling any vacation, but is paramount when selling a safari vacation! Know what your clients' interests and needs are. Do your clients want a luxury tent accommodation or do they prefer a more modern lodge? Do they want to travel with a very small group only or do they want to be part of a larger group of travelers? Are they the more seasoned and adventurous traveler whose interest lies in a self-drive tour? The baby boomer generation and senior travelers travel well in small groups. Traveling in smaller groups is much more enjoyable. This offers greater intimacy, and the leader and the guide can pay attention to each client and their comforts, and they feel that this tour is designed just for them. Escorted tours and personally accompanied tours make your client feel unique and safe. They are not just a number in a large group, but they get individual attention and have the opportunity to experience South Africa just the way they always imagined to.Look for a company that can cater to your clients' needs, one that can offers specialized tours and customized travel, one that is flexible and can offer tailor-made tours to meet your clients' needs such as honey moons, anniversary destinations, small group travel where your client is made to feel unique and safe, or even cater for larger groups such as university alumni groups. Your clients might be interested in cultural experiences, the theatre, home visits to local South Africans, or food and wine tours. South Africa boasts two luxury trains. Their main route is from Pretoria to Cape Town and vice versa taking either one or two days for the journey, but there are other shorter or longer side trips that are available. Both offer a memorable and very special experience.Another important aspect to consider is the issue of malaria. There are a number of game parks and reserves in malaria-free areas that offer the "Big Five" (Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Rhino and Buffalo) game viewing experience in just a great a way as the famous Kruger National Park does. It is important for you to be able to offer this malaria-free safari option to your clients through the operator you are working with.South Africa is the destination of the future. Most of your clients have been to Europe, have done more than their fare share of cruises, and want to learn and experience something new. Exchange rates make South Africa particularly attractive. Some Americans are considering alternatives to a European holiday, as the euro-to-dollar exchange rate makes such trips more expensive. The situation has made South Africa, with the favorable exchange rate of more than 8 Rands per dollar, more alluring. And on closer look, many travelers discover the nation's offerings are often on par with those of Europe.

Lathita Travel offers unique travel to South Africa. Robin and Stella personally accompany the groups from the USA on requestand travel with them for the entire duration of the trip. For more information, contact Lathita Travel at www.lathita.co.za, robin@lathita.co.za, or call 1-866-466-8222 or 502-545-1878. (USA)

Marakele National Park - South Africa

Marakele National Park - North West - South Africa

The Marakele National Park in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains, as its Tswana name suggests, has become a 'place of sanctuary' for an impressive variety of wildlife due to its location in the transitional zone between the dry western and moister eastern regions of South Africa. Contrasting majestic mountain landscapes, grass-clad hills and deep valleys characterize the park. Rare finds of yellowwood and cedar trees, five metre high cycads and tree ferns, are some of the plant species found here. All the large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats as well as an amazing variety of birds including what’s probably the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures (more than 800 breeding pairs) in the world, have settled here.
Marakele National Park is currently divided into two parts (namely the +/- 2500 ha ‘Kwaggasvlakte’ section and the Greater Marakele National Park), by a public gravel road (the Hoopdal Road). Most parts of the park are only accessible by 4x4.

Camps
Tlopi Tented Camp

Tlopi is the name that the locals call the river, which feeds the dam on which the camp is situated. The name Tlopi is derived from the word Motlopi, which is the Tswana, name for the tree, Boscia albitrunca or “witgat”. Its common english name is Shepherd’s tree and it is is quite common on the banks of the Tlopi river. This tented camp was formally located some 15 km to the northeast on the banks of the Matlabas River. It was moved partly for contractual reasons, but also to concentrate the park's accommodation on the park periphery.
Bontle Camping Site
Bontle is also a Tswana word that means beautiful. This camping site is located adjacent the park's new reception and administration offices. These are located at the former entrance gate to the picnic area at Kwaggasvlakte.
These names are the outcome of a consultative process locally and park management feel that the names are very applicable.

Areas of Special Interest
A narrow tar road takes visitors up to the top of the Waterberg massif. Views and scenery are spectacular. One is also in the proximity of the vulture colony and these large birds will soar past at close quarters.

5 Things to Seek
Cape Vulture
– the park hosts one of the world’s largest breeding colonies of this endangered species. While birds may be seen in the air catching thermals anywhere in the park, the drive up to the Sentech Towers is nearest to the colony and close encounters with these enormous birds will leave visitors breathless.
African Elephant – while some elephant had been previously reintroduced into the park, it was the release of the Tuli elephants in 1999 that captured the public’s and media’s imagination. Rhino – Marakele has a high density of both rhino species and most visitors should see these animals, particularly the more gregarious and diurnal white rhinoceros.
Kudu – as browsers these antelope are in their element at Marakele. Look out for the bulls with their magnificent spiral horns.
The not-so-often-seen-elsewhere antelope species such as reedbuck, mountain reedbuck, eland and tsessebe can be found here.

The Tuli Block - Botswana

Experience an African Safari in the The Tuli Block.

The attractions of eastern Botswana are today, one of its best-kept secrets. In the past however, it was populated by a civilisation that we know very little about. Some of the ruins at Mashatu pre date the nearby mysterious Great Zimbabwe ruins, and there is a permanent on-site archaeologist to enlighten you as to its ancient inhabitants.
The Tuli block became its awkward long narrow shape when it was given to Cecil John Rhodes in the late 1800's to build a railway line. There were far too many small rivers to cross, so the line was eventually constructed further west.
Access to the area was historically bad due to poor quality dirt roads and by the 1960's it became obvious that game farming and tourism were the better options for Tuli Block land. Farms began to consolidate into conservation areas, which became privately owned reserves including the Tuli Game Reserve and Mashatu - which is the largest privately owned game reserve in Southern Africa.
The wildlife areas are located between the Limpopo, Motloutse (Great Elephant) and Shashe Rivers and is a diverse wilderness of open grass plains, marshlands, massive trees hugging the riverbanks and a fascinating variety of rock types. Giant boulders and rocky outcrops are punctured by huge peculiar-looking Baobab trees and cacti-like Euphorbias.
ANIMALS & BIRDS
There are few fences in the entire Tuli area which permits unrestricted travel for animals along a large section of the Limpopo River. As a result most game farms and private lodges see migrant populations of impala, wildebeest, kudu and zebra as well as resident bushbuck, waterbuck, warthog and hippo. Nearer the Motloutse River you can add hyena, elephant, lion, leopard and cheetah to the list.
Mashatu boasts the single largest population of elephants on privately owned land (in excess of 700), and you are almost guaranteed to see lion and leopard while staying there plus a zebra, giraffe, eland, impala, steenbok and cheetah.
During night drives you are likely to encounter the strange-looking springhare, which resemble small kangaroos as they hop around in the headlights. Genet, lynx, leopard, porcupine, aardwolf and aardvark are all shy nocturnal animals that might be seen.
There are a wonderful variety of birds here, some who soar and others who prefer to keep their feet on the ground. Circling in the thermals you will see lappetfaced vultures, majestic black eagles and martial eagles, while darting to catch insects are brilliantly coloured bee-eaters, kingfishers and rollers. On the ground are ostriches, huge kori bustards, saddle-billed storks and the rather peculiar-looking ground hornbill. Other birds to watch out for are giant eagle owls and Meyer's parrots.

SEASONS
Rainy Season: Rain falls any time between September through to May and the area turns green and many of the antelopes give birth. Mid-summer months are December, January and February.
Dry Season: The land is arid and dry during the Winter months of June - August. There are few insects around and although it is cooler, it is still very pleasantly warm during the daytime with cold nights.
Elephants of every size in large numbers· Good chance of seeing leopards, lion and cheetah· Mashatu offers mountain biking, horse riding, walking and game drives· Night drives reveal rare nocturnal animals· Eagles and eagle owls· Strange-looking ground hornbill· Unique geology with unusual rocky outcrops
FACTS
The Tuli wildlife areas are all under private management, so all visitors must have prior bookings. Night drives are a speciality Rangers and trackers are usually from the Tswana tribe. Mashatu is right on the South African/Botswana border so a safari to this reserve is an easy trip by road from Johannesburg or by direct flight into Mashatu by Air Botswana. This is a malarial area.

Tsolwana Nature Reserve

TSOLWANA NATURE RESERVE
The primary purpose of the Tsolwana Nature Reserve is the conservation of a representative sample of the region’s karroid landscapes, habitats, heritage and species.

Tsolwana Nature Reserve
Tsolwana was the final result of the state-subsidised stock reduction schemes that was introduced by the government in the severe drought of the late sixties to help protect the soil against erosion.
The decreased stock numbers eventually resulted in the increase of indigenous animals, which eventually led to the area becoming a conservation area and finally in 2005 Eastern Cape Parks Board became responsible for the management of Tsolwana.
Tsolwana is in a mountainous area, with grass plains and acacia thornveld, which is home to a wide variety of fauna and flora. It is 8500ha in size and marks the start of the Karoo plains.
The reserve gets its name from the Xhosa word "Spike" which is characterised by a prominent hill within the reserve.
Location
Tsolwana Nature Reserve is situated approximately 60 kilometers west of Queenstown and 30 kilometers south east of Tarkastad, nestled on the edge of the Winterberg range.

Climate
Tsolwana lies within a summer rainfall region, but rainfall is unpredictable and often falls in heavy storms, sometimes with accompanying hail, particularly in November. Rainfall peaks during January to March.
Snow is not uncommon in the winter months and spells of cold, wet southerly winds can cause wildlife losses, particularly in plains species.
Temperatures also vary greatly. Summer maximum reaches 38°C, but frost can be expected between May to August. Strong north-westerly winds can be expected from July to September, while frequent southwesterly winds bring rain in summer.
